Why this exists

Fire, flood and burglary rarely take one thing. The question is whether your sum insured would actually rebuild and refurnish at today's prices, not what you paid years ago.

What it covers

  • The building structure, and usually fixtures and fittings
  • Contents, to the sum insured you set
  • Fire, lightning, explosion, and named perils such as flood and storm
  • Burglary, where forcible entry can be shown
  • Alternative accommodation on many household policies

What it does not

  • Wear, tear and gradual deterioration
  • Damage from lack of maintenance
  • Theft without evidence of forced entry, on most policies
  • Property left unoccupied beyond the period the policy allows

Exclusions vary between insurers and wordings. These are the ones we see most often — yours should be read individually.

Who it is usually right for

  • Homeowners, including landlords
  • Tenants, for their own contents and improvements
  • Anyone with a mortgage, where cover is usually a condition

We do not sell this policy to you.

We compare it across insurers, tell you whether you actually need it, and stand with you if you ever have to claim on it. Start with a conversation, not a quote.
